Income

As many as one-third of working Americans do not earn enough money to meet their basic needs. These individuals are walking a financial tightrope - they are barely able to get by, with no ability to save for college, a home, or for retirement.

The community and family issues that stem from the economic and financial pressures facing individuals and their families are growing increasingly complex and more difficult to address. Wages have not kept pace with the rising cost of housing, healthcare, and education in many areas, and skill levels have not stayed in alignment with changing industry needs. As a result, more than 15 percent of the Delaware County population has an income below the federal poverty level, in spite of the fact that many are employed, some with two or three jobs.

United Way of Delaware County is focused on helping lower income individuals and families achieve greater financial stability by working towards the following community-level goals:

  1. Increase Income
  2. Build Savings
  3. Gain and Sustain Assets

Basic Needs

United Way of Delaware County will continue to fund programs that provide basic needs services to the residents of Delaware County.

In order for an individual or family to achieve financial stability, their basic needs must be met. While our three Community Goals in the Income Focus Area are all targeting financial stability, one of the seven corresponding Community Objectives is that low income individuals and families have their basic needs met. Programs are eligible for funding if it is demonstrated that the program helps low income individuals and families meet their basic needs.
