United Way of Delaware County believes that Education, Income and Health are the building blocks to a good life. However, these essential building blocks are presently out of reach for many who live and work in our community. United Way is doing what no single organization can do on its own; bringing together leaders from government, corporations, human service providers and the community to tackle the issues that effect us all, even the person right next to us. There are no quick fixes, but everyday United Way brings together partners, people, and organizations that bring the passion, expertise, and resources needed to get things done.
United Way of Delaware County Board of Directors has announced the 2012 – 2015 Community Solutions Grants awarded to twenty four nonprofit programs serving the residents of Delaware County. The number of funded partners has increased from the 18 funded partners of the previous 3 year funding cycle. Each of the funded programs is aimed at creating an impact in a specific area relative to the community goals, strategies and community metrics set by United Way of Delaware County. Some of these goals include, but are not limited to, increasing the numbers of children entering school ready to succeed, increasing the number of families accessing primary health care providers, or helping families achieve financial stability.
In a six-month process that began early May of 2012, UWDC received thirty-seven grant requests equaling close to $2.5 million. Over the course of the next few months a group of community volunteers spent hours reviewing the applications to determine which programs demonstrated the closest alignment with UWDC’s impact goals in the areas of education, income and health. “We truly wish we were able to fully fund more of the requests,” said Karen Hemberger, Director of Agency Relations and Interim President/CEO of UWDC. “The nonprofit organizations in our community are doing an incredible job, however, the goals of UWDC are very ambitious so we have to be extremely strategic in allocating funds.”
Kevin Kenyon, chair of the UWDC Board of Directors noted, “It is our responsibility to those who invest in UWDC to ensure that the donors’ gifts are supporting programs that make the most impact in our community. The volunteers that served on our review panel used a thoughtful and careful process to determine the programs that would best meet the goals we have set. This process is one of the main reasons why donors believe in United Way and our mission.”
As is apparent from the list of agencies below, UWDC is committed to investing in diverse programming that is effective and making an impact in the community. In addition to the grants, UWDC continues to partner with additional nonprofits, businesses and faith-based organizations across the county in coalition work, focused collaborations, advocacy and volunteerism to make our community a better place to live.
During the fiscal year 2012-2013, a total of $892,000 will be granted to these programs. (It is important to note that the amount available for these grants comes from the donations made to UWDC during the previous 12 months.) This number is not inclusive of the $177,000 received in designations to the nonprofit organization of the donor’s choice listed below, the $170,000 in donor designations to nonprofit organizations not listed below, or the $150,000 in challenge grant funding to United Way.
Congratulations to the following programs and organizations. A program summary for each of the funded partners can be found on the United Way website, www.invitedtoliveunited.org.
